If you so choose to remain at home during a zombie apocalypse, you're going to want to make sure your home is well protected against any zombie, wether it be your traditional natural zombie or voodoo zombie. There are some things you can do to your home to construct a zombie proof fortress.
1.)Water Proof Your Home:
Can zombies swim? researchers and experts still aren't sure on the verdict, but surely getting to your home will be much more difficult. Building a moat around your home is a lengthy process but will more than likely keep you safer than your average civilian.
Build a wall around your property. Building a wall around your property will give you the upper hand on the defense. Make sure to build your wall with brick (it's sure to hold that way) and as high as you can possibly make it. Zombies don't have enough brain power to realize they can't make it over the wall however, the corpses eventually will start to pile up and those mindless creatures will be able to climb over.
Once the zombies are able to get over the wall, your only hope is that your home is built to stand against them. One way to make sure they can't get inside is to make sure the vulnerable parts of your home are secured. Gating your windows with steel or iron is one sure way to go. Card board, wood, and glass can be easily broken to a zombie with superhuman strength and a thirst for human brain. Another option you might want to explore is plexiglass.
Although elevation is a good thing (getting you further from the ground) it can also be a lee-way for zombies getting into your home through the second floor or being able to get to you on the second floor. Being in a ranch style home gives you the upper hand, knowing your on one level and one level only, you cant be attacked from above.
Having an escape tunnel could be your last resort, if all else has failed you and you're being attacked then your escape tunnel is your last and only hope. Be sure to have your first aid kit and zombie apocalypse survival kit with you at this point.
